| Blaming people of Jammu for Jammu's defeat | | Weak Leadership | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 26: While talking to certain local leaders in Jammu on Tuesday to find what has failed the people of Jammu province, some of them blamed the people for the raw deal they had been getting since 1947. "The people of Jammu never supported the Jammu-centric parties. They either voted for the anti-Jammu Congress or the Valley-based and Kashmir-centric National Conference. Had they voted for us in large numbers and supported our calls, the condition of the people of Jammu province would have been altogether different and they would have by now attained a status equal to that of the politically conscious Kashmiri people. They weakened their own cause by voting for parties whose agenda was Kashmir-centric," they told this correspondent on the condition of anonymity. When asked to comment on the role the people of Jammu, including youth, played in 1998, 2008 and 2009-10, they had no satisfactory answer. Some of them even dismissed those movements as big failures. In 1998, the people of Jammu in general and youth in particular, had launched a massive movement to compel the authorities to establish Mata Vaishno Devi University and Agricultural University in Jammu and give a fair share of representation to the Jammu youth in the professional and technical institution. The universities were established and the commission which was appointed by the then State Government to look into the third issue recommended the admission policy as laid down in the Jammu and Kashmir Universities Act of 1969. In other words, the commission recommended that all the seats available in professional and technical colleges located in Jammu province should be allotted to the Jammu youth and similar admission policy be made applicable to Kashmir. The commission's report, which was submitted in 1999, is still there in the secretariat. When this reporter drew their attention to these facts, they just feigned ignorance. Believe it or not, but it is a fact that at least three senior leaders said that "they are not aware of any such report" (RP Singhal Committee report). However, they did acknowledge that it was the role of the people of Jammu province and its youth and not of the political parties which led to the establishment of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and Agricultural University. They also admitted that some of the prominent Jammu leaders had tried to sabotage the movement". Besides, they also admitted that the people of Jammu province played "a very important role" in 2008 Amarnath land agitation and in the 2009-2010 agitation launched to force the authorities to not only set up Central University in Jammu but also to appoint a local Vice-Chancellor. When confronted with certain facts, they described as "very successful" all the three popular movements and admitted that the "Jammu leadership failed to take advantage of the situation created by the popular mood in Jammu and squandered the God-sent opportunities". For how long the Jammu leadership will blame the otherwise highly awakened and politically mature people Jammu province? It has to change its style and attitude and behave like true representatives behave. It's no use blaming the people of Jammu province. As for the people of Jammu province, only in 2008 they voted for the parties which had fought the election in the name of Jammu and their number was no less than 28. They belonged to Congress (13), the BJP (11), the Panthers Party (3) and the Jammu State Morcha (1). |
