| Sher-e-Kashmir awards on hold for years as CM has no time | | When Awards spell embarrassment | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 26: The Jammu and Kashmir council has failed to honour its outstanding sports persons despite announcing the Sher-e-Kashmir awards way back but the function to give away the awards has been postponed several times. The lackadaisical attitude of the Government and the council is demoralizing the sportspersons who have brought laurels for the state at national and international levels. These awards were for the year 2010, but two years since they were announced, the Council has not been able to get a function arranged. Sources in the sports council told Early Times that several times the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was apprised about the matter and the date for holding function was sought but nothing was heard from the CM's Secretariat, forcing repeated postponements. Not only this, the Government is also not looked interested in getting the function organized. "This time the function was scheduled for December 5, but it was again postponed due to non-availability of Chief Minister" sources said. Now, recently the Minister for sports has said that they will include awardees for 2011 and 2012 as well and a joint function will be held but date has not been finalized. "This is to delay the function again as it will take months to finalise the names for the awardees of two more years and possibility of holding awards function is remote in near future," sources added. Meanwhile, the sportsmen who have been named for the awards are heartbroken on yet another postponement and indifference of the Government. "The Government is not serious in awarding sportspersons and that is why the function is being postponed every now and then. When the Chief Minister has time for tom dick and harry, then why doesn't he get couple of hours for us who have brought laurels for the state," said a sportsperson who has won medals at national level for J&K. He said that when Government can spend millions of rupees for bringing Mohan Bagan to J&K and give them VIP treatment, why can't they honour own sportspersons. "Despite the fact that we train on our own and spend money from own pockets for games and bring medals for the state but when it is Government's turn, they shy away from their responsibilities," he added. |
