| Home Deptt asked to take 'appropriate' action against 2 officials | | Cabinet gives clearance to 'findings' of Bedi Commission | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 3: After submission of report in favour of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah last week, the State Cabinet too today gave clearance to the Bedi Commission findings which was constituted to probe into circumstances in which NC leader Haji Mohammad Yousuf died in September 2011. The Cabinet also directed the Home Department to take appropriate action against two officials who have been pointed out as responsible for dereliction of duty in not informing the relatives of Yousuf that he was arrested after questioning at CM's official residence. In the Cabinet meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Ministers discussed the report that was placed as vital agenda. The Cabinet unanimously approved the findings and recommendations of Bedi Commission in having given clean chit to the Chief Minister and others who were questioned during the probe by the one man Commission. However, what came as important step after submission of the report is that Cabinet today asked the Home department to take action against the two officials against whom fingers have been raised by the Commission in the matter. The Cabinet, sources said, while discussing the matter felt since the officials failed to fulfill obligation of informing the relatives of Haji Yousuf about his arrest on night of September 29 in 2011, they are liable for the lapse and therefore, appropriate action needed to be taken against them. Pertinently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah got a clean chit in the much publicized Haji Mohammad Yousuf death case when retired judge of the Supreme Court, H.S. Bedi, submitted the report of a one-man Commission of Inquiry to the State Government in Jammu over a week back. Yousuf's controversial death, during his questioning at the Chief Minister's residential office on September 29, 2011, had led to a storm in the political circles as his family members and several opposition parties levelled allegations of "custodial killing" against the Chief Minister and a coterie of his confidantes. Yousuf had been called to Abdullah's residence after a National Conference worker and CM's representative in Ganderbal Assembly segment, Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, complained that Yousuf had collected Rs. 87 lakh from him with the promise that he would be nominated as an MLA and thereafter a Minister of State incharge of the Public Works Department. On November 18, 2011, the Government had assigned the inquiry to Justice Bedi. After several extensions were granted to complete the investigation, December 28, 2012 had been fixed as the deadline for the inquiry report's submission. The Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs released excerpts of the findings, minutes after the 96-page report was handed over to Law Secretary Ghulam Hassan Tantray last week following Cabinet took up the matter for formal approval today. The State Cabinet also cleared the proposal for transfer of land, about 129 kanals in Samba for the purpose of setting up Batallion headquarters in the district. In one more decision the State Cabinet gave nod to proposal of transfer of Maneesha Dogra's case from Police department upon her selection under KAS to Accounts department as sought by her. |
