| Is BJP MLA from Marh joining NC? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: Is BJP MLA from Marh constituency Sukhnandan Chowdhary preparing himself for quitting the party he served for more than two decades and joining the ruling National Conference (NC), which he bitterly opposed throughout? If some insiders are to be believed, then it can be said that he has planned to quit the BJP and join the NC. According to insiders, "Chowdhary has come to believe that he would not be in a position to win for the second time on BJP ticket, as the party has become very unpopular over the period" and that "there are some personal reasons as well which have compelled him to snap ties with the BJP and throw in his political lot with the NC". Sources also reveal that the "discussions between him and some NC leaders are on" and that "the only issue that has not yet been resolved is the timing of his joining the NC". "The other problem is the possibility of senior NC leader and MLC Ajay Sadhotra opposing the induction of Chowdhary in the party. His fear is that the induction of Chowdhary in the NC would weaken his case, as the latter is a sitting MLA," insiders and other reliable sources revealed on condition of anonymity. "Things would become clear sooner than later," the sources also asserted. Chowdhary, despite many drawbacks, was considered as an hardcore BJP activist committed to the party ideology, interests of the people of Jammu province, especially the small and marginal farmers, and had mobilized public opinion against the NC to the extent that he inflicted a crushing defeat on the NC candidate. That was the reason that the party again and again gave mandate to him to contest the Assembly elections from the Marh Assembly constituency. It was only in 2008 that he could win defeating the NC candidate and former Minister of State Ajay Sadhotra, Farooq Abdullah loyalist. It would be a great setback for the BJP, which is already passing through very critical times, if Chowdhary finally joins the NC. |
