Srinagar, Jan 13: In an apparent bid to hamper the movement of security forces engaged in counter-infiltration and counter-insurgency operations, Pakistani army has tasked the militants to sneak into the Indian side of Line of Control (LoC) to plant land mines on the tracks in the hinterland.
"Pakistan army has been resorting to sending terrorists across the Line of Control to plant mines on tracks in hinterland," said Lieutenant Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Northern Command.
Sources said Pakistani army is using the militants, who are waiting to infiltrate after being trained in the terror camps across the LoC, as multi-purpose mercenaries with a twin job of creating subversion besides planting mines in the hinterland.
Sources said the mines are being laid on the tracks in the hinterland so that the security forces movement could be hampered with and maximum number of militants could sneak into this side for subversion.
The fresh revelations of Pakistan using militants as mercenaries have come at a time when the tensions are mounting on the LoC after the unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops on Indian forward positions.
It started with the Pakistani violating ceasefirein Uri sector in which some civilian houses were damaged in the Churanda village. It was followed by the brutal killing of two soldiers of 13 Rajputana Riffles.
Most of the ceasefire violations on the LoC are aimed at giving cover to the infiltrators to cross into the Indian side. Pakistani forces, sources said are trying to exploit the inclement weather and poor visibility in the winter to send-in more and more infiltrators across the J&K to keep the pot boiling.
According to the assessment made by the Multi Agency Centre (MAC) 247 militants tried to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir in 2011 of which 52 were successful. From January to June 2012 nearly 103 terrorists tried to infiltrate of whom only 38 could make it.
Given the designs of militants and Pakistani army, the centre is mulling constructing an all-weather fence on the 740 kilometer line of control (LoC) to create a fool-proof obstacle to ensure zero infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. |
