| PCI dismisses SMVDU complaint against ET | | | early times report Jammu, Jan 18: The Press Council of India (PCI) has dismissed a complaint against Early Times filed by Registrar, Shri Mata Vaishnav Devi University (SMVDU ), Jammu. The complainant had accused Early Times of launching a vilification campaign agai-nst the University. The stories filed on May 16 and 31, September 2 and October 2, 2011 pertained to `luke warm' response to MBA seats to be filled through CAT. According to the story, only 145 forms were sold through bank and on line as against overwhelming response of the candidates for the course in the past. The VC was also accused of doing a favour to the manager, Transport Nagar Branch of the UCO Bank by directing the students to deposit their fee there. Pertinent to mention here two nationalized banks have branches in the campus. The story also stated that the VC had misused the vehicles allotted by the union government for a sponsored project that failed. The log books of the vehicles, the story said, had not been updated. The Professor in charge of the project INSPIRE hired two vehicles for Rs 1500 per day but produced the bills of Rs 3000 per day. The university refuted the charges giving detailed explanations. The complainant said that he tried his best to drew the attention of the respondent editor to facts on January 27, 30 and 31 and February 3, 2012 but he did not accept the clarifications. The respondent Editor in his para wise reply to the show cause notice on the PCI denied the allegations. He maintained that the complainant never came up with specific answers to meet the contents of the news. The respondent also made clear that the response of the complainant was either bureaucratically arrogant or evasive. Or, the complainant did not pick up the calls. "The SMVDU is an important institution and its shortcomings have to be brought to public arena. The question of personal malice or motives does not arise", he said. After taking cognizance of the complaint, the PCI constituted an enquiry Committee that heard both the parties. However, the Committee was not satisfied of sufficient ground of upholding the complaint. The complaint as accordingly dismissed on December 21, 2012 and was authenticated by the PCI chairman, Markanday Katju.
