Girls outshine boys in academics, but lose shine in IAS

early times report
Jammu, Jan 18: Education has reached women. But the fairer sex is yet to reap its fruit.
The newspapers may be plastered with the "Girls outshine boys" headline every time Class 10, 12 and graduation results are declared. But in spite of the girls outdoing boys time and again, their number in the cadres of Indian Admi-nistrative Services and Kashmir Adminis-trative Services (KAS) is low.
An academician at Jammu University blames lack of opportunity and disparity for the disappointing figures.
"It shows the disparity between girls and boys. It's all due to lack of opportunity for the girls. They are efficient but the society and the family do not give them opportunity to prove it," says Rekha Chowdhary, dean (academics), Jammu University.
Girls have outshined boys in the final year examination of bachelor's programmes in Jammu University as out of fifty toppers in five courses arts, commerce, management; computer applications and sciences 36 are girls.
In the 12th result declared on May 7, 2012, the girls had out shined the boys, besides topping in the Arts, Science and Home Science girl students have also secured seven positions in the Commerce discipline. But when we look at the Merit lists of the Indian Administrative services (IAS) and Kashmir Administrative services (KAS), the number of girls remains low, as in the merit list of IAS-2011 there were only 20 girls out of 100 toppers.
"Whenever they get chance to prove themselves, they had proven that they are not only equal to boys, infect they can do better than boys." She added.
However the literacy rate of girls has been increased, but the most of the parents of girls don't want them to go for higher studies or appear in the professional examinations.
"I think the only reason is that the parents don't want their girls to go for professional examinations, they just want their girls to do graduation with good marks, so that they can be get married with a well settled guy," said Meenakshi Sharma, B. Ed Student.
"For most of the parents, the main motive behind the girl's education is to get her married in a good family, they don't want them to do a job," She added.
Another girl from English department of Jammu University, Ayesha Mahajan said, "Most of the parents allow their girls to go for only teaching profession, and if they are financially sound and the girl is good in medical, then they prefer her to go for MBBS."
"The society has been changed a lot for girls, but still the mindset of the people has to be established," she added.
