SRINAGAR, Jan 18: It has been this year's first snowfall in Srinagar and the whole city has turned white after the moderate snowfall which hit the summer capital from Thursday evening.
The other parts of Kashmir Valley too have received moderate to heavy snowfall since Thursday afternoon which resulted into closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
The Metrological office in Srinagar has predicted that the snow fall would continue till Friday night.
The snowfall has brought a great relief to people not only in Srinagar but the whole valley has got a relief from the chilling cold as the temperature had reduced to sub zero since last two weeks as the dry conditions prevailed in the whole valley from the last more than a month. The State Government has issued avalanche warning in far flung areas and especially the border areas of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Srin-agar received more than 5 inches of snow and the adjoining districts of Ganderbal and Budgam have received around one foot snow. The south Kashmir district of Kulgam, Anantnag and Shopian have received around two feet snow which is considered to be good thing for the apple crop.
The continuous rainfall started in Srinagar and its adjoining areas from early Thursday afterno which lead to the snowfall by Friday evening.
Areas along the Srinagar-Jammu highway including the gateway to Kashmir- Qazigund- Banihal and Ramban received rain and snowfall during the day. But the snowfall intensified late afternoon.
The situation was alike in districts like Budgam, Ganderbal, Kupwara and Baramulla.
The change in weather is considered to be a good omen for the tourism industry as hill resorts like Gulmarg and Pahalgam welcome the much-awaited change in weather. The inclement weather resulted in further dip in the day temperature, the nights in the Valley would witness a reverse effect in temperature, said an official of the MeT office.
