Inclement weather creates panic among Waltengoo-Naad residents

Kulgam, Jan 18: In the late evening of Friday, panic gripped among the residents of Waltengoo-Naad here in south Kashmir's Kulgam district after few locals predicted possibility of an avalanche. Many recalled the horrid memories of the past snow tsunami of 2005 which still is haunting many locals.
Residents especially women folk came out from their houses and started wailing and seeking for the mercy of Almighty while as some young people tried to contact district authorities.
"It is continuously snowing from yesterday in the area and now winds started blowing and the situation has created fear among the villagers," a local told over telephone and added a contact was build with Kulgam police by few people.
He said that Deputy Commissioner couldn't be contacted because of network problems. He also informed that the area is without electric supply from last three days. Soon after the Kulgam police received information from the area they deputed a team of jawans to rescue the residents.
"Yes, we have received information and just have deputed the team to rescue them because the area is avalanche prone and we are not going to take any risk." Dy SP HQ's Kulgam Shabir Ahmad Mir said while confirming.
Meanwhile People's Democratic Party Zonal President Qazigund, Zaffar-ulah Mir told early times that he along with his workers today visited the area and evacuated the families residing in upper areas of the tribal colony. "Today we evacuated maximum families from their and now there are only few who didn't agreed come down." He said, adding government hasn't taken such steps in this regard as they know that area is avalanche prone.
Worth to mention that Waltangoo Naad is located in the palm of foot hills of mighty mountains of Peer Panjal range in South Kashmir's Kulgam district were more than 250 died in year 2005 after an avalanche hit the area.
