| ICDS programme fails in Kashmir | | Mother, child left high & dry | |
Srinagar: The mushroom growth of Anganwadi centres in the state has rendered the scheme infructious with the employees having been left high and dry for the past six months. Under this scheme, the funds come from the central government. The state government also contributes ten percent of the money. While the central government has been releasing the funds on time, the state government also released its share a few days ago. Where have the funds and the ration gone? A worker gets Rs 3000 from the centre and Rs 600 from the state. However, the amount is released after several months in Jammu Kashmir as compared to other states where the worker gets a handsome amount and that too on time. Jameela Sabri , the general secretary of the Anganwadi workers and helpers says there is no ration to be provided to the workers these days. During the past five years, the salary has registered an increase by Rs 50 only, she said. Interestingly the workers were assured promotion on the basis of their experience but no promotion has been effected for the past fourteen years. Jameela also complained of lack of proper space and infrastructure for running the centers effectively. Under this scheme the government takes care of the child and the mother. But for quite some time now, these activities have come to a halt. The social worker Director, Bashir Ahmad Khan has accused the centre for delaying the funds. "Now the funds have been released and the state has also contributed its share. Things will take a favourable turn in a couple of days", he said.
