| Post Guru, uncertainty hangs over NC- Congress relation | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 9: With Afzal Guru's hanging; political circles see uncertainty hanging over National Conference-Congress relationship. The NC had been opposing the hanging fearing a serious backlash in Kashmir. Both Omar and Farooq made it repeatedly clear. Farooq was more vocal than Omar. He went to the extent of saying that Guru's hanging would set Kashmir on fire. Omar questioned the wisdom of BJP for opposing clemency to Afzal Guru. Guru's ghost had started haunting Omar even before he was hanged. He desperately wanted a pre-poll alliance with the Congress but during his visit to Ajmer shrine he told reports there would be no such alliance with the Congress. And a day after coming back from there he was informed that Afzal Guru would be hanged. Omar now has a feeling that the hanging would be played against him by People’s Democratic Party the way NC had been targeting PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for bringing former Governor whom they blame for killings of people. NC would now find it difficult to go in for pre-poll alliance with Congress fearing that the hanging would be exploited by both PDP and separatists. And with possible whipped up feelings, it would be left for it go it alone to salvage some political standing. Omar had tried to rework his party by assigning leaders that task of reaching out to people but now he would have to re-assess the situation for political survival. |
