JAMMU: In a Simple but impressive function, J&K State Judicial Academy High Court of J&K held Oath taking ceremony for distribution of Advocates License for new entrant to the legal profession in the State Judicial Academy at Jammu.
The function was presided over by Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir, Judge Incharge, State Judicial Academy. Before delivery of enrolment certificates (Advocates license) to the Advocates of Jammu province, they were administered Oath by Mr Abdul Wahid Director J&K State Judicial Academy.
In his address, Hon’ble Justice Manoor Ahmed Mir Congratulated newly enrolled Advocates and welcomed them to the fraternity of legal profession. He enlightened them on the professional ethics and conduct, Court Craft and art of Advocacy, adding that Lawyers, as guardians of the law, play a vital role in the preservation of society. The fulfilment of this role requires an understanding by lawyers of their relationship with and function in our legal system. A consequent obligation of lawyers is to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct.
In fulfilling professional responsibilities, a lawyer necessarily assumes various roles that require the performance of many difficult tasks. Not every situation which the lawyer may encounter can be foreseen, but fundamental ethical principles are always present for guidance. Within the framework of these principles, a lawyer must with courage and foresight be able and ready to shape the body of the law to the ever-changing relationships of society. It is crucial for the beginners to know the attributes that are valued in the profession. They need to ascertain whether they have these qualities, and if not, assess their ability to develop them. They shall at all times maintain the honour and dignity of their profession. They shall, in practice as well as in private life, abstain from any behaviour which may tend to discredit the profession. He advised the lawyers to keep themselves updated on the law and in particular development thereof both legislative and judicially.
Justice Mir urged the lawyers to be the sincere to their clients and underlined the importance of advocating their clients cause in the Court of Law with a good grasp of the facts of the matter as handle by them, and a good understanding by the law as applicable thereto, or closely applicable thereto as the case may be, they must put forward their case before the judge in a systemic fashion and do so clearly and loudly enough for the judge before whom they are appearing.
He stated that as advocates and solicitors they have mixed duties, duty to their client, duty to the Court, duty to their opposite counsel and duty to the establishment to which they are attached to. In the discharge of these several duties, they must at all times keep them-self at their forefront, the paramount duty of them in seeking justice to their client’s cause and be prepared to discharge that duty without any fear or favour, and to the best of their ability.
Director, State Judicial Academy, Mr. Abdul Wahid thanked Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir for enlightening the newly enrolled Advocates on the professional ethics, conduct, truthfulness, honesty, updating the knowledge of laws and art of advocacy, duties and responsibilities as an advocate. He hoped that the words of wisdom and suggestions will go a long way in making them a good professional lawyer.
