| IUST becoming hub of favouritism, nepotism BACKDOOR APPOINTMENTS GALORE | | | Majid Ahmad SRINAGAR, Apr 12: The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) set up as a Centre for higher learning for the people of Kashmir has become hub of favouritism and nepotism with recruitments being done through the backdoor. Sources told Early Time Plus that blue-eyed candidates who have lesser qualifications, lesser percentage of marks and in some cases who don't have even the required eligibility are being given preference in recruitments. "Few months back an Assistant Registrar was sent to Costa Rica on a university exchange programme instead of a faculty member from Peace and Conflict Studies. On her return she was appointed as Head of Department of the Peace and Conflict Studies leaving the deserving aspirants in lurch," they alleged. Similarly, daughter of one of a senior bureaucrat was appointed last year on a gazetted post through backdoor without following the laid procedure. "These incidents are just tip of an iceberg. There is massive bungling in recruitment process in the IUST. The University which had been established to become the hub for dialogue and a platform for imparting job oriented skills has become hub of corruption, nepotism and favouritism," sources added. A senior official of the IUST wishing anonymity said that the University which had come into existence to create an environment for learning, teaching and research in the sciences, technology, humanities and social sciences has lost its relevance due to malpractices of the authorities. "According to the mandate of the IUST people belonging to all sections of society are entitled to avail the facilities and opportunities offered by the University. But it seems that the University has been established to promote a particular group of people," he alleged. "Most of the times the recruitments are being done in a hush hush manner to benefit the blue-eyed candidates. The level of nepotism and favouritism in the IUST is higher than the Kashmir University. However, the IUST has been ignored by the media due to which the scandals happening here aren't being highlighted," they added. The IUST was established through an Act No. XVIII of 2005 dated: 7 November 2005 passed by J&K State Legislature and notified by the State Government, through Jammu and Kashmir Government Gazette dated: 11-11-2005. While the university started functioning in November, 2005 the teaching programme was started in July 2006. The Chancellor of the University is the Chief Minister and the executive authority of the University is its Executive Council with the Vice Chancellors of University of Jammu, University of Kashmir and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University as members. Appealing the Chief Minister to order a probe into the alleged bunglings in the IUST, a group of students told Early Time Plus that it was high time that the Government should come forward to save this prestigious institute. "The IUST has been made a dumping ground for retired persons. In new recruitments merit is no consideration but favouritism. The Government should take this issue serious and save this institute from such corrupt practices," they added.
