Gastroenteritis outbreaks in Brakpora Achabal, dozens fell ill

Anantnag, Aug 1: Panic gripped Brakpora Achabal area following the outbreak of gastroenteritis disease which has infected dozens during last three days. However, health authorities have maintained the that disease is under control. "From past few days again this year again people fell ill and got infected in water born diseases like diarrhea and showed symptoms of gastroenteritis." Iqbal Ahmad, a resident said. He said that those who got infected are treating themselves in medical clinics while as few among them have admitted themselves in different hospital including district Hospital Anantnag. "Despite repeated requests for providing us safe and pure drinking water, we are being provided contaminated drinking water by PHE department resulting into outbreak of gastroenteritis infection affecting scores of people here," he added. Up in arms against the PHE department for supplying contaminated drinking residents said that despite hundreds assurances, department in not serious in supplying the drinking water. They alleged that the employees of the department are also no serious in cleaning the water tank. Medical supriendent at District Hospital Anantnag confirmed the outbreak of water born disease in the area and said that every day they treating at least 20 to 30 gastroenteritis patients coming from different areas of the district but today several among them were from Achabal.
Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, when contacted said that disease is water born and according to preliminary investigation it is was found because of contaminated water being supplied to the area.
"it is because of contaminated water and in this regard who have constituted a team headed by BMO achabal who have visited the area and are supposed submit a detailed report," CMO said, adding disease is seasonal and under control. Block Medical Officer, Achabal who today visited the disease affected area told early times that they found the outbreak of disease on the second consecutive year is only because of the contaminated area. "It is because of unsafe drinking water, we visited the tank were from they are getting water supply however locals informed us that the employees chlorinated the tank early this morning. So we advised people again to use boiled water and gave them further awareness in this regard" he said.
