The hospital under the able and revered command of Brig Man Mohan Harjai has been actively involved in promoting health awareness by conducting such campaigns regularly despite the hospital being considered as one of the busiest hospital in the zone. The two essential components of KMC are the exclusive breast feeding and skin to skin contact. Two babies of birth weight less than one Kg presently admitted were the shining examples of the good practices being followed in the NICU and the quality care provided by the hospital. She interacted with the mothers and appreciated their patience and motivation levels about exclusive breast feeding to their newborns. Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. Adequate breastfeeding counseling and support are essential for mothers and families to initiate and maintain optimal breastfeeding practices. Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. As highlighted by Who if every child was breastfed within an hour of birth, given only breast milk for their first six months of life, and continued breastfeeding up to the age of two years, about 220 000 child lives would be saved every year. Brig Harjai added that according to National Family Health Survey exclusively breast fed infants at 4 months of age was 37% and at 6 months of age was 19% only. Only 16% mother initiate breast feeding within the desired one hour after birth, 37% do by the end of the first day, 63% women discard colostrum due to lack of knowledge (first milk excretion after birth is called colostrum). |
