| Postal department to hold national level cricket tourney in October | | | Sports Reporter SRINAGAR, Aug 1: In its bid to put Kashmir on the sports map of country, Department of Posts is going to organize an All India Cricket Tournament in October this year. The tournament is likely to give a fillip to the sports activities in the Kashmir valley more so on the national scene. Addressing a press conference here today, Chief Postmaster General Jammu & Kashmir Circle, John Samuel said that T-20 cricket tournament will be held at three venues of the summer capital from October 1 to 5. Samuel said Kashmir is already known a well known tourist destination adding the cricket tournament will promote Kashmir valley as a sports destination in the country. Samuel said that Department of Posts had hosted the All India Athletic Tournament here in 2011 and All India Football tournament. He said hosting of such events had brought Jammu and Kashmir on the sports map of the country. He added that the department is ready to walk an extra mile in this regard so that more sports activities are organized in Kashmir. Samuel said the All India Cricket Tournament would now further boost sporting activities in the state and also encourage the youth towards sports. He said postal teams from all the states of the country would be participating in the tournament. Samuel said the department would approach cricketers of international fame for the inaugural event that would further put Kashmir on the sports map of the country. He said the postal department would also be recruiting staff under the sports quota as well. He added the department would leave no stone unturned in promoting the sports culture in Kashmir more so in the entire state of Jammu & Kashmir. “The process for recruitment is underway….10 people will be recruited under the sports quota – five each in Srinagar and Jammu during this year. Once people are recruited under sports quota there is a possibility that more sports persons would apply for the various posts. This would automatically promote sports culture in the department,” Samuel said. The Department of Posts will be hosting the All India Cricket Tournament with the support of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). |
