SRINAGAR, Aug 13: Normal life was affected across Kashmir valley due to the continuous rainfall and downpour since Tuesday morning. Continuous rainfall led to water logging in most of the areas of summer capital of the state and the other districts of Kashmir valley.
Since early morning people of the Srinagar city got relief from the sweltering heat prevailing over the past few weeks. As the heavens opened up and rains came down people could be seen greeting each other over the latest weather development. The rainfall continued for the entire day with brief intervals in between. Both the pedestrian and traffic movement was affected to a great extent due to the rainfall.
Reports of moderate to heavy rainfall were also received from the other parts of Kashmir valley. People more so those involved with agriculture and horticulture sectors heaved a sigh of relief as the rains came down. As there were no rains over the past few weeks, people were expecting the heavens to open up thus providing them relief from heat and humidity.
A spokesman of Meteorological (MeT) department said that Srinagar city received 21 millimeters of rainfall on Tuesday. The spokesman said that the maximum temperature recorded in summer capital was 20.5 degrees Celsius while as the minimum temperature was recorded as 17.9 degrees Celsius.
Tuesday's day temperature was 11.4 degrees Celsius less than the day temperature as recorded on Monday with the mercury reaching 31.9 degrees Celsius on August 12. The MeT office has predicted that light to moderate rains are likely to hit the Kashmir valley over the next 24 hours.
"Light to moderate rain/thundershowers would occur at most places over the state with heavy falls at some places over Jammu division. Heavy rain/thundershowers are likely at some places over Jammu division during next 24 hrs. It is likely that there would be decrease in precipitation in the Kashmir division over the next four days," said the MeT spokesman.
Tuesday's rains once again exposed the faulty drainage system in the summer capital of the state. Most of the drains were overflowing with the excess water spilling over to the main roads, lanes and by-lanes. This created problems for the people and it became very difficult for them to reach their respective destinations.
"Areas like Bemina, Mehjoor Nagar, Rambagh, Natipora and Sarie Bala have been submerged due to water logging following incessant rainfall. The lane leading towards Magharmal Bagh from Sarie Bala presented scene of a lake and people had to take off their shoes in order to cross the lake of water," said Mohammad Imran, a city resident.
The residents have posed a question over the efficacy of drainage system in the Srinagar city. They said despite spending of hefty sum on correcting the drainage system there is no change in the ground situation. They said that few hours of rainfall throw life out of gear as far as proper drainage system is concerned.
"From time immemorial we have been listening that drainage system has been improved in Jammu and Srinagar cities. The same may be true for Jammu but as far as Srinagar is concerned there is nothing of that sort. Money meant for improving the drainage system has gone down the drain with no relief for common masses," said Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Abi Guzar.
