Police curb media from discharging professional duties
DM's orders violated with impunity

JAMMU, Aug 13: In a bid to assert their authority, City police have been violating the instructions of the district authorities to restrain mediamen from performing their professional duties in the curfew bound areas of Jammu.
Despite clear instructions from the District Magistrate to treat media persons carrying I-cards issued by the department of information, City police (south) led by SDPO Udai Bhaskar Billa has been disregarding the instructions of the civil administration by refusing to treat the I-cards of the media persons as curfew passes.
The IPS officer has either been ignorant or deliberately Violating communication of the District Magistrate (DM) Jammu aired on August 12 to all concerned police and Army officers deployed in Jammu district for imposition of curfew in 10 police stations that clearly directed them to allow the Media persons holding JK Information department identity cards to perform their professional duties by treating their cards as curfew passes.
SDPO Udhay Baskar harassed media persons for not having valid curfew pass and refused to treat their cards as curfew passes.
"No, No…..We will not allow any media person" asserted the officer refusing to honour the directions of civil administration.
When contacted Jammu-Kathua range DIG Shakeel Beig said, "I am on the way to Bikram Chowk and let me see the matter there. Instead of doing anything, DIG Beig only met the concerned officer (Baskar) and moved on."
Earlier, DIG Beig met media persons near Dogra Chowk to discuss harassment to two Photo journalists by police officers and assured the media persons that no police officers shall harass any media person while covering the event during the curfew hours. As per wireless message circulated by the District Magistrate, Beig also assured that media should be allowed to cover their event during the curfew in 10 police stations and their cards should be treated as curfew passes."
