Jammu, Sept 1: After one year of installation most of the traffic signals in the winter capital have stopped functioning. Few signals at Narwal Chowk, Satwari Chowk, Railway Crossing, Bikram Chowk, Gandhi Nagar crossing, Gandhi Nagar women College Chowk, are presently functioning while remaining have developed snags. "Traffic lights have been installed a year ago but traffic police and administration have totally failed to regulate the traffic, causing huge traffic jams during peak hours," Rajnesh, a student of Jammu University said. He further alleged that traffic police were not serious about their duties as nobody could be seen at that junction where traffic signal were presently not working. He added after two months the secretariat would come to Jammu and the number of vehicles in the city would increase which would add more chaos on city roads. "Many of the lights are non- functional besides at some junctions timers are not working. At Green belt crossing, many a times, the timer is not working and it creates a very awkward situation and sometimes, the confusion among vehicle owners results in mishaps", Surinder Singh a salesman of Pharma company said. Pertinently, in the project 60 points of Jammu and Kashmir have to be covered for installing the signals in two phases. In the first phase, signals were set up at 30 places including Narwal, Gangyal, Bikram Chowk, Jewel, Panama Chowk, Satwari Chowk, Green Belt, Gole Market, KC Chowk, Shakuntala Chowk, Rehari and Janipur besides other crossings of the city. Due to controversy over the maintenance and payment issue with the company, the already installed traffic signals have turned out to be a total failure. |
