| Rocked by Pak shelling Garkhal locals urge govt to shift them to safer places | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 25: Rocked and panicked by the heavy shelling by Pakistan, the residents of border villages in Akhnoor sector especially from Garkhal today appealed to the state authorities to shift them to safer places in the wake of escalating tensions along the international border in recent past. After witnessing heavy shelling in Gharkhal and other adjoining areas of Akhnoor late Thursday/Friday night the majority of villagers are scared and not willing to go back to their villages as they fear the tensions are escalating with each passing day. Here it needs to mention that eight civilians including two children received splinter injuries late Thursday evening when Pakistan Rangers resorted to heavy firing in the Kanachak sector and Gharkhal sector along the International Border (IB) of Jammu frontier. During the exchange of firing 82mm shell lobbed from Pakistan side exploded in the house of Raj Kumar injuring Ratno Devi, Kuldeep Raj, Asha Devi and Pramila Devi later the injured were rushed to Govt Medical College & Hospital Jammu. According to officials the Pakistan Rangers targeted atleast 17 Border Out Posts (BoPs) including Kanachak and Gharkhal of Akhnoor causing great insecurity among the people. However in the wake of heavy shelling the BSF and civil administration acting swiftly moved atleast 71 families from the Gharkhal to the Rajpura village which somewas in a shadow zone and was out of Pak shelling range. The villagers spent their nightmarish night amid thunderous sounds of mortar shells and rattle of firing in Govt School buildings in the area but now they have been raising the demand to shift to safer area. According to local villagers BSF advised them to vacate their houses as they feared Pak was going to target the border villagers in a big way as they are 'soft target'. At least 10 civilians including women and children were injured and shifted to GMC&H Jammu for medical treatment. The biggest worry on the mind of villagers is finding safe shelters for them and for their livelihood as they can't go their agricultural land due to heavy firing. The villagers also claimed it is easy for youngsters to run away but it is difficult for elderly people, women and children to rush to safety in case of any emergency. The villagers also claimed for last one week they have not been doing any work due to prevailing tension in the area and are struggling to meet daily expenses. |
