| People of Kashmir brace up for harsh winter as power supply goes erratic during autumn | | | Javed Shah SRINAGAR, Oct 25: As the harsh season of winter is still a month away the people of Kashmir more so living in the summer capital of state are up against the power woes. The erratic and irregular power supply has compounded the problems of masses and there seems to be no relief in sight. Power Development Department (PDD) is already in the headlines and quite aptly for the wrong reasons. Erratic power supply particularly during winter months is a mental agony for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. However, this year the disturbing trend has much before thus throwing the life out of gear. Most of the areas in downtown Srinagar are bearing the maximum of the PDD's apathy and maltreatment. Over the past three weeks unscheduled power cuts and load shedding are giving sleepless nights to the large population in the areas of downtown Srinagar. "We have been experiencing the worst kind of treatment by the arrogant officers of Power Development Department and nobody is listening to our pleas. We have been running from pillar to post in order to seek solution to our grievances but as on today there is no such relief. If this is the situation in autumn one can easily say that matters would get worse in the winter season," said Suhail Khan, a resident of Babademb-Khanyar. Sajad Ahmad, a resident of Nawa Kadal said that the curtailment schedule drawn up by the PDD is never adhered to thus putting the people to trouble. Sajad says the regular shutdown of power supply upsets the schedule of the people and they are never able to carry on with their plans due to wrong planning of PDD. There is a section of people who say that once the Durbar officially shifts to Jammu the people of Kashmir would be up against many odds as far as power supply is concerned. They opine that failure of PDD to create a buffer stock of transformers during winter creates problems as the transformers break down at any point of time.
