| Stray dogs rule the roost, no strategy to tackle menace | | | eARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 25: In absence of any fool-proof strategy to tackle the menace of stray dogs, the streets and roads in Jammu city are slowly turning out to be the free zone for the wandering canines which have become a major threat to the safety of the people. The large number of stray dogs in winter capital of the State has led to a sharp increase in canine attacks particularly during evening hours. Though no particular survey has been conducted that how many canine live in the city, but their number is increasing at fast pace in markets, residential areas and near educational institutions. In several parts of the city, dogs could be seen roaming which at times attack the passersby. Walking down on the city roads and streets has become unsafe as stray dogs could be spotted around every corner, mostly using garbage dumps as their living area. Further even after lapse of one year, the project to start the tagging of the pets in the city in order to identify the stray animals from domesticated ones. The plan was to target the dogs and cattle and to take measures against menace of stray animals which have become a major headache for the citizens. However, officials blame the mushrooming of the residential colonies and accompanying garbage dumps in recent years as the reason for the massive increase in the population of dogs creating an unpleasant situation in the city. Sources informed that lack of funds is a big hindrance to carry out any measures to check the population of the dogs.
