| 302 resignations to shock Sagar on his North Kashmir visit | | Disgruntled panchayat members | | Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, Nov 16: As a mark of protest, 302 village heads of North Kashmir's Baramulla district have finally decided to submit their resignations to Rural Development Minister during his forthcoming visit to inaugurate two Panchayat houses. Although hundreds of village heads across Kashmir resigned over the years following threats from militants, however, the decision of mass resignation of North Kashmir's Wagura block based on 35 Panchayat Halqa's of Sangrama constituency was taken today in voluntary. "The decision to resign is voluntary and not triggered by any militant threat. The reasons lie in indifference of the authorities towards panchayat members," said one Sarpanch namely Mohammad Shaban of Manigam of Wagura Bock. The village heads while taking to Early Times said that decision of mass resignation was taken in a meeting today held in Wagura block in which around 250 village heads from different panchayat Halqa's participated and showed their willingness to go for mass resignation the day concerned Minister is scheduled to visit the area to inaugurate two newly constructed panchayat houses in Hail Jageer and Kreeri-B Halqa's. The founding members of all Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) namely Ghulam-ud-Din Gulshan and Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Sofi while criticizing the policies of State Government said that there is no option left with village heads across the state to surrender and save their lives as according to them their lives have turned miserable since they were elected as village heads . According to the vice president of AJKPC, Abdul Majeed, the coalition Government instead of empowering the panchayats relieved them of whatever powers they had. "They have made implementation of the 73rd amendment an issue. The Panchs and Sarpanchs are not entertained anywhere not even in Chief Minister's constituency, he said. Director Rural Development Department, Altaf Ahmad Mir said that he will try to approach the concerned village heads before the visit of Ali Mohammad Sagar. "I will try to solve all the problems of village heads in case they approach me in person or fax me their problems, he said. |
