SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Business community of Doda district in Doda-Kishtwar has alleged that state government has deliberately delayed the project of Doda-Kapran road that will shorten the distance between the Kashmir valley and Doda-Kishtwar in the Jammu division.
These observations were made by the businessmen of Doda during their interaction with a team of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) that carried out a visit to the Doda-Kishtwar. The Doda businessmen said that Doda-Kapran road has missed many deadlines since the work started on the project about 30 years ago.
"The Dessa-Kapran road has faced years of neglect from the government. The road would provide shortest link to Kashmir valley from Jammu region," said Karamtullah Nehru, President Beopar Mandal and Transport Association Doda. Nehru said that roads on either side are complete and only the construction of tunnel is pending for many years. The traders said that the construction of the tunnel Dessa-Kapran tunnel would connect Doda-Kishtwar to Kashmir for the entire year. The KEA concluded its tour to Doda-Kishtwar with a meeting with traders of Doda district seeking their alliance in trade and commerce activities. KEA, an amalgam of various trade bodies of Kashmir, met with the business fraternity of Doda on last day and resolved to restore the lost business ties with valley.
In a one hour meeting between the traders, contractors and transporters and civil society of Doda, KEA assured that they would support the demand of Doda-Kishtwar traders and provide all the logistic and economical help required to revive the trade in Doda.
"KEA has decided to transport all the essential commodities to Doda, so to break the monopoly of traders who have deliberately hindered the growth of other traders in the place," said Mohammad Yasin Khan, Chairman KEA. Khan said that traders of Doda-Kishtwar have been the victim of politics and have been purposely left behind.
He said that he would raise the issue of road connectivity to Doda-Kishtwar with state government.
During their tour KEA also met members of Beopar Mandal of Banihal where traders demanded for an additional bogey in the train to carry their goods from the valley. "All the traders of Banihal are very keen to transport all the essential goods from Kashmir if the authorities add the extra bogey in the train for the goods," said Shahnawaz Khan, President Beopar Mandal, Banihal. Khan said that it will be more viable for the traders of Banihal to transport the goods from Kashmir because of the less transport fare from Jammu. During the tour KEA formed its committee in Kishtwar, Doda and Banihal for its commercial activities in the region. The KEA members who were on the two day tour included Chief Spokesman Siraj Ahmad, Vice Chairman Mohammad Iqbal Tramboo, Constituent Member Mohammad Sidiq Ronga, Sheikh Mohammad Yousuf, President KEA Handwara Unit Ajaz Ahmad Sofi and KEA Chief Advisor Khurshid Naqib.
