Jammu, Nov 17: Realizing that wrong policing had only tarnished the image of the force, the Police Department, it seems, has started flirting with the idea of doing some social work. The department has offered free counseling, free consultation and free medicines to make its drug de-addiction programme a success. There is no denying the fact that abuse of drugs by the youth in the state has been a matter of grave concern for long. As a matter of principle, the Police Department has to play a major role in ensuring a drug free society. This goal can be achieved if the Police act honestly and with dedication. Statistics prove that the police have not done what it should have done to eradicate t he menace. Running a de-addiction centre is good but the best way is to strike at the very roots of the menace. Can the police say how many drug smugglers and peddlers have been taken into custody in the current year? How much drugs have been seized and how many have been charge sheeted? Here an attempt is not being made to tarnish the image of the Police department. But, the reality is that the police have been accused of promoting the menace and safeguarding the smugglers and peddlers. The police, therefore, has to act for improving its image as well as for saving the society from the deadly tentacles of smugglers and peddlers. The police have to think beyond de-addiction. |
