Jammu, Nov 17: Three days 12th Open State Fencing championship w.e.f. 17th to 19th Nov 2013 was inaugurated by B.L. Gupta, principal of the college, in the campus of Govt. Degree College Billawar today. Mohinder Gupta, Divisional Forest Officer, Billawar, presided over the function while Ram Lal Upadhaya, Former UNO Advisor, was the guest of honour. The championship has been organized by J&K Amateur Fencing Association in collaboration with J&K Sports Council and Govt. Degree College Billawar. More than 200 fencers including 50 girls from different districts of the state will compete for 92 medals in three event i.e. Sabre, Epee and Foil in the U-12, U-17 and open category for both boys and girls. Some of the players of international and national repute like Major Bikram Singh Jamwal, Rashid Ahmed, J&K Police, Sanjeev Suri, Ujwal Gupta, Ranchan Sabarwal, Richa Sabarwal, Vishal Thapar, Vilas Radotra, Koushal Sharma from Billawar and Sagar Sahi from Jammu are also taking part in the competition. This event is being conducted by Chottu Lal, Fencing Coach of J&K Sports Council, and assisted by other senior players like Shivani Hans and Dimple Thapa. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. B.L. Gupta congratulated the organizers for holding such a mega sports event in a hilly and remote area like Billawar. While declaring the championship open, he blessed the participants and put a word of advice and caution to the fencers to play with sportsman spirit. DFO Billawar also spoke on this occasion and said that this fencing sports event would encourage many potential players to compete for national and international competitions. Ram L Upadhaya said that fencing has a long history with universities and schools for at least 500 years and impressed upon the participants to imbibe the sportsmanship during such competitions. President, J&K Amateur Fencing Association M J Sharma IFS and General Secretary, J&K Amateur Fencing Association, Vijay Sharma sent their best wishes to the participants. On Day one, U-12 final was played between Mayank Sharma of Distt. Kathua and Naman Kumar of Jammu Distt in which Mayank Sharma emerged as winner. Balbir Singh of Ramban District and Poorvik Suri of Jammu District secured 3rd and 4th position. Large number of people of Billawar including school and college students attended the inaugural ceremony. The prize distribution ceremony will be held on concluding ceremony of the competition on 19th Nov. 2013.The function ended with the vote of thanks by Chottu Lal. |
