GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Tree Talk on Gurpurab

Jammu, Nov 17: The NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, organized a Tree Talk on the eve of Gurpurab in the college campus here today.
While continuing his efforts with the green mission of spreading love for nature and knowing neighborhood biodiversity in its traditional and modern context, Tree talk crusader O P Sharma Vidyarthi, Chief Conservator of Forests - Ecotourism, delivered his 246th Tree talk especially designed for students residing in the college hostels hailing from different regions of Jammu, the NSS Volunteers and those studying botanical sciences.
Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, who was Cheif Guest on the occasion, said that conserving our own environment, biodiversity, and our rich culture and traditions linked with the nature take us closer to the teachings of Guru Nanak. "The Gurpurab makes this awareness programme even more relevant today". She said. She appreciated the programme that has done commendable job of inculcating tree consciousness among students and common masses by having regular awareness programmes across JK state.
Dr. Vidyarthi focused Sunday's Gurpurab green walk and talk on the plants in the college campus like Jiyopta, Sohanjana, Maulsari, Harad, Baheda, Agnimantha, Saptparna, Sukhchain, Tinbru and various other traditional plants of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh region, Punjab, Bengal and neighboring countries, including Sita Ashok, Parijat, Nagalingam, Maulsari, Nagkesar, Neem and Karanj, Figs, Chinars and Devdars, Vanya Kadamb Kaim, Mitragyna parvifolia, Goolar, Shaitan vriksh and Arjun tree, and highlighted their ecological, mythological, medicinal, cultural and religious importance.
Dr. M. Ashaq Malik, from Department of Botany and NSS Programme Officer of College, said that inclusion of local flora and fauna in the university curricula in more numbers can augment the students' interest manifold towards biodiversity conservation.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Anita Kotwal, Hostet warden, Vandha Sharma and Sardar Manjit Singh. Prof. Pourish Sharma conducted the proceeding of programme whereas Dr. Ashaq Malik presented the formal vote of thanks.
