Sonia or Rahul Gandhi alone can end factional feud in Congress unit in J&K

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 23: Despite AICC Chief,Sonia Gandhi's commitment to end factionalism in the state unit of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir and notwithstanding Congress General Secretary Ambika Soni's advice to the two faction leaders to close their ranks the party continues to be a divided house.
When a group of Congress leaders called on Sonia Gandhi in August last to convey their displeasure over growing feud between two factions of the Congress and between some Congress ministers, conflict between Sham Lal Sharma and Taj Mohi-ud-Din in their mind, the Congress President had pledged to end the party feud.
In the last week of October Ambika Soni too had suggested to the senior Congress leaders to join hands lest the NC and others benefitted from the division in the Congress. But till date there is no sign of reconciliation despite momentary display of unity which was displayed during a function held in Jammu in connection with the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi.
Promoting discipline and forging unity between the two factions in the state unit of the Congress is not a difficult issue because the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir my have the least importance in the Government making exercise in the centre. Its importance lies in its capability for being a Government maker after the birth of the PDP and in strengthening the state's link with rest of the country. Why then the problem of factionalism has remained unresolved ?
The main reason being inability of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for understanding the ramifications of a divided Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. The mother-son duo seems to be more keen to see survival of the present political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir thereby indicating that both Sonia and Rahul are eager to allow the NC-Congress coalition Government to complete its term.In the summer of 2010 when the Kashmir valley was hit by major civilian strife in which 120 people lost their lives in police action the centre had thought of altering slightly the political arrangement that had been framed in 2009.But Rahul Gandhi's timely intervention is said to have led to the survival of the Omar Abdullah led Government.
And Rahul Gandhi has assumed sufficient political weight needed for ending the factional feud in the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir. But reports indicate that he is more interested in perpetuating his friendship with Omar Abdullah than trying his hand at setting the Congress house in order in Jammu and Kashmir.
Well having a divided Congress in a sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir can be acceptable during non-poll period.Neither the political nor the security fabric collapsed in Jammu and Kashmir during the last over five years on account of divided Congress but it cannot be acceptable for those running the Congress show from New Delhi when the dates for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections were drawing near.
A divided Congress can prove beneficial for the NC in the battle of ballot in the Kashmir valley and to the BJP in the Jammu region.Even the PDP and the Panthers Party can draw mileage from a divided Congress during the poll period.
And there is still time for Rahul Gandhi to stem the rot.Well as was the case with Mohan Prakash and others bringing about reproachment between the two factions of the Congress is not within the hands of Ambika Soni because both Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz have a stature equal to her. Both Azad and Soz can easily be tamed and tuned by either Sonia Gandhi or by Rahul Gandhi. No other Congress leader in the centre can perform the miracle of promoting cordial ties between Soz and Azad.
