| Is Lal Singh a BJP man in Congress? | | Preparing ground for Azad | | Rustam JAMMU, Nov 23: Is Congress MP from Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary constituency Choudhary Lal Singh a BJP man in the Congress party? Is it not a strange question? Yes, it appears quite strange on the face of it. But the reality is that he was actually dubbed as a "BJP man in the Congress" by some Congressmen on last week in the presence of none other than Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during his recent visit to the erstwhile Doda district. What made certain Congressmen dismiss Lal Singh as a BJP man in the Congress? Those who raised their fingers against Lal Singh and dubbed him as a BJP man in the Congress charged the MP with "ignoring the Muslim-dominated areas of Kathua-Udhampur-Kishtwar Parliamentary constituency". "It is very unfortunate that the MP has been focusing on a few pockets of the Lok Sabha constituency while he never even bothered to visit (the non-existent) Doda-Kishtwar regions," they said during a public meeting in his presence, as also in the presence of Ghulam Nabi Azad. Not just this. They also accused Lal Singh of showing "more concern" about the demands projected by BJP people. "The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) was also spent in those areas where BJP has strong presence, while the areas deserving immediate focus were ignored," they were quoted as saying. It is misfortune of Lal Singh that the followers of a particular religion have turned against him overlooking his ultra secular credentials and his too well-known anti-BJP views. It appears those who tore into him were not aware of the attack that Lal Singh launched on the BJP in the Lok Sabha on July 12 in the wake of the well-organized attacks by the fanatics on the Hindus of Kishtwar on July 9. Taking on the BJP, which was only expressing concern over what happened in and around Kishtwar town on the holy day of Eid and demanding stringent action against the anti-national elements, Lal Singh had tried his best to counter the BJP's charges and inform the lawmakers that "Muslims also got killed" that day. It appears those in the Congress, who do not share his views that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and that the Kashmiri leadership's demands like greater autonomy and self-rule just cannot be accepted, want the Congress high command to ignore him and field Ghulam Nabi Azad this time in the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency. There are already reports to the effect that the Congress high command is thinking in terms of fielding Azad from this constituency. |
