Court adjourns Peer's bail till Dec 2, Crime Branch opposes plea | | | S Sabaqat
Srinagar, Nov 29: An Anti-corruption court today adjourned hearing on a bail application moved by former chairman of the Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE), Mushtaq Ahmad Peer in connection with multi-million paper scam in Common Entrance Test (CET). Meanwhile the Crime Branch has strongly opposed the bail plea saying bail will hamper investigation in BOPEE Scam. Peer, who was arrested November 23 by Crime Branch, had moved the application before the Court of Special Judge Anti-Corruption Kashmir, Mohan Lal Manhas. However, the court adjourned the case and posted it on Monday. Crime Branch has opposed his bail application, saying that during the custodial questioning he did not disclose the modus operendi adopted in the leakage of papers. Submitting details of investigation conducted by it so far, the Crime Branch said that after reliably learning about his involvement, the main suspect, Farooq Ahmad Itoo was called in office of the investigation agency. In his statement, Itoo revealed that he had been running a private computer institute-Infotec Computer in Bijbehara town of Anantnag and during the year 2001-2002, he had applied for its registration to NCPUL, New Delhi. "Peer who was then working as Head of the Department of Computer Sciences at University Kashmir had been instructed by the concerned authority (NCPUL) to have an on spot inspection of the computer institute for granting registration or otherwise," the investigation agency said. "In 2009, after Peer was posted as Chairman J&K BOPEE, Itoo continued to visit him and very often requested for some help in selection of candidates in CET," the CB revealed, adding, "In the month of April 2012, the Itoo went to Peer's house at Nigeen, Hazrathpl and asked him to help him in getting through some candidates in the MBBS examination." "Peer agreed the deal and asked Itoo to wait till the month of May, 2012 and accordingly the deal was settled before conduct of examination between Itoo and Peer for Rs 60 lakhs in lieu of providing question papers prior to the examination," Crime branch stated while quoting Itoo's statement. Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has also opposed bail application of another accused Sajad Ahmad of Kulgam. Revealing Sajjad's involvement, the Crime Branch said that he received question papers of Physics, Chemistry and Biology from Itoo at Nishat and distributed it among various candidates through Haroon Rashid of Dayalgam, Anantnag. The investigating agency said that it was expecting some disclosures from Sajjad which may lead to recovery of some vital evidence in the shape of bank accounts, call details, identification of touts or candidates in other districts of the state and thus sought dismissal of the application for bail moved by Sajjad. The Crime Branch said that since investigation of the case is in progress, releasing Sajjad on bail will cause "prejudice to the investigation because there is every likelihood of him jumping over the bail and will try to win over the witnesses. |
