| Article 370 unifying factor, revocation impossible: Soz | | Cong invites Modi for debate | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 2: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress committee (JKPCC) chief Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz dared Modi to have debate with him on Article 370. Addressing a press conference here today, Soz said, "Modi is not aware of the facts. Whatever he said was not correct." He promptly added that Modi had no knowledge of history and the Constitution of India. "Article 370 is irrevocable because it is of permanent nature in the Constitution of India," said the Congress leader and added that Article 370 is a 'bridge' between Jammu and Kashmir and the Union of India. Soz said that Modi was not factually correct about what Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had said on Article 370. "Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had said that Article 370 could be debated but within a period of time and could be amended only if people of the state wanted," said Soz. He asked BJP to explain what they had done when they were in power on Article 370 that provides special status to the people of the state, while asserting that it is the unifying factor in the state. His reaction came a day after BJP's prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi demanded a public debate on Article 370. "When the BJP came to power, did they do anything with the Article 370? Article 370 is irrevocable. It is an integral part of the Constitution of India; no power is capable enough to remove it completely. It has a permanent nature in India. Article 370 is the unifying factor in Jammu and Kashmir, and the Congress Party fully accepts this factor," Soz said. Soz further ridiculed Modi saying that he felt sorry for the saffron outfit for choosing a prime ministerial candidate who is unaware of history or politics. "I see Modi's impact on ground and it is zero. This is because he is not an organised politician, and he sometimes doesn't know what he says. I feel sorry for the BJP, as I have known them for a long time, for choosing a candidate who knows propaganda but does not know history or politics,' he said. Soz referred to Joseph Goebbels, who was considered to be Adolf Hitler's closest aide, and said that it would be good if BJP realizes its mistake of naming Modi as its prime ministerial candidate. "In modern times, even Goebbelian untruth is not accepted anywhere. Even in Germany, there is a sea change. A practice of speaking falsehood is unlikely to fetch anyone benefits in the long run. "But I have convinced myself that BJP will realise this mistake that their prime ministerial candidate does not answer the requirements at all," he added. He maintained that Congress would give befitting reply to communal and divisive forces in the country and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will come back to power as UPA-III in the next Lok Sabha elections. He said that projecting Narendra Modi as prime ministerial candidate would prove to be a 'great blunder' on the part of BJP and it could never come to power at the Centre because people of the country believe in secularism and would not accept its policy of hatred. He said that strengthening the Congress is a befitting reply to the communal and sectarian forces and asserted that only Congress can lead the nation on the path of peace, progress and prosperity. Soz said that the Congress party has always played a major role in unity and integrity of the state and the country and maintaining the religious brotherhood and communal harmony and have policies and programmes aimed at development and welfare of people of all walks of life. He said that Congress does not divide the people on lines of region or religion and believe in strengthening democracy and transparency and ensuring development. He referred to vision of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for empowerment of Panchayats throughout the country and said that people have voted for democracy at the grassroots and 'we are duty bond to empower the people through Panchayats'. |
