| Threatens ET reporter for implicating in frivolous case | | Media gagging by SHO Bhaderwah | | Bijay Charak JAMMU, Dec 2: Undermining the authority of fourth pillar of democracy, a Jammu and Kashmir police official is considering entire Bhaderwah tehsil as his personal fiefdom, wherein without his orders even media persons are not allowed to do some story on any issue. The arrogant Station House Officer Bhaderwah, Gurmeet Singh on November 29 threatened to implicate this reporter in a frivolous attempt to murder case, when the correspondent visited the Police Station Bhaderwah for lodging a complaint against some fake caller. The public servant even asked this reporter to take permission before reporting in Bhaderwah. The ordeal started when this reporter visited native tehsil on November 24. On getting information about felling of green trees in Bhaderwah, the reporter met DFO Bhaderwah on November 28 and sought details about various blocks of Forest division Bhaderwah. DFO gave details of Kellar and Neru range. When this reporter went to Kellar Range on November 29, around half a dozen guards and a Forester met me. When I enquired about green felling, they denied the reports. As I was approaching to meet Neru Range officials, I received a phone call from number 08803653325. After enquiring my personal details, the caller deliberately desired to meet me for handing over a press-release and a photograph. The call smacked foul. I asked the caller to meet me at Police Station Bhaderwah. When I urged the Station House Officer Gurmeet Singh for lodging a complaint against the caller, he instead of registering a complaint, the SHO started intimidating me. After enquiring about my personal details, SHO Gurmeet Singh said that if you have been working in ET's Jammu office, then who has given you the permission to do reporting at Bhaderwah. "You are not registered reporter at Bhaderwah, then how you dare to report from here", SHO threatened me. SHO even went on to add that he had so far served in 12 police stations of Jammu city and every reporter was known to him but not me. "How much time you have spent in journalism?. You have no knowledge of media and who has sent you to report from Bhaderwah", SHO said to me. More to my shock, when I asked SHO to register a complaint against the caller, SHO replied that he had made the phone call on verbal complaint of some Forest officials. The SHO went on to add that he would soon call Forest Ranger, to give a written complaint against this reporter , so that I would be framed in a case and would be behind bars. "I will implicate you in a frivolous case under section 307. Tu Muje Janta Nahi Hai, Tu Kahan Soya Hai", SHO shouted at me. When this reporter asked SHO, if there was any complaint against him, then arrest him. "You have spent only 6 months in Journalism and you are considering yourself Abdul Kalam", SHO said to me besides after lot of threatening and intimidation, SHO asked this reporter to do positive stories. Even this reporter has recording of entire conversation with SHO and another person, who was sitting besides him. The other person even went on to say that the SHO had even assaulted an IPS officer. "You don't know about power of this SHO, he has even thrashed an IPS officer and you are an Ordinary reporter. Don't interfere in any matter of Bhaderwah", the other person said to me. Such is the power of an SHO in Bhaderwah, who is seemingly hell bent to transform, the largest democracy of world into a police state. I am sending a written complaint along with recording to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Director General of Police, Home Secretary to take strict action against such officers, who are bringing disrepute to J&K police and also to the government. |
