| SHO shot dead, 3 others injured | | Attack on Chadoora Police Station | | Mustansir SRINAGAR, Dec 2: Unidentified militants today attacked a police station in Budgam district of central Kashmir, killing an officer and injuring three others, including a shopkeeper. The incident took place when a group of unidentified militants attacked a police party headed by SHO, Shabir Ahmad just outside the Chadoora Police Station in Budgam district and injuring critically the SHO and his two associates Constable Mohammad Shai and SPO Firdouse Ahmad. A shopkeeper identified as Ghulam Mohammad was also injured in the attack. The attack took place shortly after the police party left the nearby police station for patrolling, police sources said, adding the ultras escaped from the scene, taking advantage of panic which followed the firing. Sources said the militants were carrying AK assault rifles and attacked the police party just outside the police station. SHO, Shabir Ahmad and three others injured in the shootout were rushed to a Srinagar Hospital for specialized treatment, however, doctors declared Shabir as brought dead while other three injured were being operated upon when this report was filed. Sources said that the SHO killed in the firing incident was a resident of Uri, adding two other police men were also injured in the incident. Eyewitnesses told Early Times that the shootout created panic in the Chadoora town and people were seen running for shelter. The attack on police party has come as a shock to the administration as the Budgam district was considered militant free. "Though there have been several militancy related incidents along Pantha Chowk-Parimpora bypass falling under Budgam district, however, the interiors like Chadoora town were considered militant free," a senior police official told Early Times. Senior police and civil officers rushed to the spot soon after the incident and a massive search operation was launched to nab the assailants. A police spokesperson confirmed that SHO Chadoora Shabir Ahmed was killed in the shootout at Chadoora in Budgam district central Kashmir today. He said militants fired upon the police officer from point blank range outside Chadoora Police Station killing him on the spot. Two cops and a civilian also sustained injuries in the attack. Police sources said the dead officer was a senior counter-insurgency official and worked against militants for over a decade. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. The spokesman said that police has launched hunt for the gunmen behind the attack. Meanwhile, senior civil and police officials participated in the wreath laying ceremony of the deceased police officer killed in Chadoora firing. |
