Kishtwar, Dec 18: In a fresh attempt to vitiate atmosphere in communally sensitive Kishtwar District that witnessed worst communal clashes on August 9 this year, some mischievous elements struck at Shiv temple in Changer village of Marwah Tehsil of Kishtwar and stole one of the idols installed in the temple. Burglars also decamped with cash kept inside the temple.
As per the details available with "Early Times" the burglars entered inside the temple the previous night by breaking the windowpanes and escaped after committing the crime when temple priest raised alarm. As soon as the incident took place, local people came out of their homes and held strong protest and in state of anger pelted stones on police bunker put in place to guard the temple.
Sensing trouble, SHO Marwah who was summoned by SP Kishtwar a day before to Kishtwar has been asked to report back to his duty. SP Sanjay Kotwal along with Dy. SP Shafayat rushed to Marwah state chopper as the area is without road connectivity.
After hectic efforts by Marwah police led by SHO Marwah Momin Zarger, stolen Idol as well as cash were recovered from a nearby stream. As per the reports, the stolen Idol was found wrapped inside a Faran (popular Kashmiri dress), while the cash was found wrapped in an undershirt. In order to prevent any law and order breakdown, police sealed all entry and exit points leading to village Changer, only village in entire Marwah belt having population of about 120 people hailing from minority community, beside links leading to Navapachi where large number of people from adjoining villages had assembled including the people from majority community has also been sealed as people from both the communities were protesting against the incident demanding arrest of the culprits.
SP Kishtwar Sanjay Kotwal held a meeting with various public representatives and assured them that police will probe the matter minutely and will book the culprits involved behind the burglary. He informed the people that police has registered an FIR in this regard and has set the investigation rolling. Meanwhile as mark of protest against the theft at Marwah temple, Sanathan Dharam Sabha Kishtwar has called for Kishtwar bandh tomorrow.
Meanwhile the common people question the timing of the incident and suspect some conspiracy behind the theft in Marwah temple. In a similar incident last time at Kishtwar that too ahead of parliamentary election in 2008, an Idol of goddess Ashtdast Bujja was stolen from Parna Temple on 5-12-2008 for which FIR No. 39/2008 u/s 457/380/295-A stands registered at Police Station Chatroo, but the idol was recovered from nearby Chingham forest at an isolated place after nearly three years after the incident on 8-7-2011. To the utter surprise, the incident took place few days before parliament elections held on 17-12-2008 in Kishtwar District and has created communal divide in Kishtwar District at that time after 12 August 2008 communal clashes.
Meanwhile, coming down heavily on state government, police and administration; Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Kishtwar today said that government had fail to safe guard the religious places of minority community.
