12/19/2013 9:32:52 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Dec 19: Historical Mughal road has been closed for vehicular traffic after first snowfall of the year today. Authorities responsible for the construction and maintenance of the Mughal road said that the road has been closed between Peer Ki Gali and Dugrian in Poonch district and area which has witnessed more than 18 inch snow till the filing of this report.
Rains followed by storm and snow at higher reaches have ended a dry spell and people who were getting affected due to dry weather have taken a sigh of relief.
On the other hand farmers were also happy as the rains brought respite for the drying up corps. The cold wave has gripped the entire Rajouri and Poonch districts and people were seen gathered around bonfires in the bazaars and lanes.
Sources said that the first snowfall has brought major decline in the day and night temperatures . The temperature at and Peer-Ki-Gali, a point o the meeting point of Kashmir valley and Jammu, has been dropped between -10 to -15 degree Celsius.
The first snow fall followed by chilling cold waves could lead to close the historical Mughal road minimum for more than two months during peak winter season.
Mughal road is the shortest highway between Jammu and Kashmir and most of the traders and people from Rajouri, Poonch districts and Kashmir valley move on this road.
Abdul Ghanie, Executive Engineer, Mughal Road said that the heavy snowfall at Peer-Ki-Gali have forced the authorities to close the highway. "We are watching the situation and if the weather improves after few days snow cutter machine will be deployed on the road to make it possible for vehicular movement".
He further added that the fall of temperature between -10 to -20 degree Celsius may add more trouble to make the highway operational.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has recently demanded the Union government to declare the Mughal road as National Highway. The Mughal road is almost completed and is waiting for its official inauguration which was once postponed due to frequent land sliding this year.
