| Third Front to hold convention in Jammu on Dec 22 | | Move to widen political base across Jammu region...? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 19: In order to give a statewide base and shape to the newly floated political outfit Third Front is organzing a convention in Jammu on December 22. This will be first ever political activity in Jammu after it was formally launched in Kashmir nearly two months back. Third Front which is an amalgamation of various political parties has some senior politicians of the state on board and it is trying to rope in more and more leaders across the state to widen its base. The purpose of organising the convention in Jammu is to convey a message that the Front is not merely confined to Kashmir Valley. Ahead of Assembly elections in the state as the Third Front has increased the political activities in Kashmir Valley with public rallies and conventions being orgnised in different districts, it has now shifted the focus of such activities to Jammu where first convention is being held on Sunday. Even as the representative base of the Third Front is largely Kashmir based, the leaders are trying to widen its base in all the three regions so as to make it emerge as strong political alternative to the already established two regional parties in Kashmir NC and PDP. The stalwarts associated with the Front Hakim Mohammad Yasin- a former Minister, MY Targami veteran CPM leader and BSP leader, former MP Sheikh Abdul Rehman have interestingly christened the Front as 'People’s United Front'. For some purported reasons, the leaders associated with the Front are seeking to get it circulated in the political corridors and media circles as ' Awami Mutahhid Mahaz'. Pertinently, the leaders held a series of meetings in Kashmir Valley before it was launched formally in October to register itself in the political arena as alternative with 'like minded' people and parties on board. Except for BSP and Lok Jan Shakti Party, there are few smaller organisations and leaders from Jammu who have associated themselves with the Front. However, the Front leaders who have wide political connections have sought and are trying to incorporate even the organisations with community based character and nature of the Front, a move that will enable it to have wider participation of people in the activities at community levels too. The leaders have also been trying to woo Awami National Conference led by Begum Khalida Shah, who happens to be the sister of NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and aunt of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to become an amlagam of the Front. But till date the attempts have not fructified nor has ANC leader Muzaffar Shah, who is learnt to be in constant touch with the Front, so far ruled out any such step. |
