Government gives least preference to health of masses

SRINAGAR, Dec 19: Despite the recent disclosure that products of two leading food brands in Kashmir are adulterated no action whatsoever has been taken against the companies. The inaction from the Government mocks at claims of providing safe and standard food to the people.
Few days back it came to the fore that the packaged milk being supplied by Khyber Group of Companies is adulterated as it contains detergent. The presence of detergent in the packaged milk was revealed by Central Food Laboratory, Kolkata. It is being seen as a danger that can lead to serious repercussions for the people as far as their health is concerned.
At the same time it also got revealed that Fennel (Saunf) powder manufactured and packaged by Kanwal Group is highly adulterated. It got confirmed that the samples of Fennel contained colouring agents like Carmoisine and Tartrazine that are unsafe for human health.
Sources told Early Times that despite disclosure about Khyber Milk and Fennel manufactured by Kanwal no action has been taken to stop their further sale in the market. This has led to a situation where the health of commoners is at risk and one cannot rule serious consequences on account of health in near future.
"Khyber milk continues to be supplied to the retailers by the company despite the report of Central Food Laboratory. The company higher ups are giving an impression that nothing wrong has happened and everything is fine. The agencies concerned with the overall monitoring and supervision are keeping their eyes closed. This means health of people does not matter and it can be easily put to risk," said sources.
Sources said that this is not for the first time that sample of packaged milk has failed to conform to the prescribed norms. They said in the past the 'erring' managed to run away with no action being taken against them. They opine that same may happen this time too since big business houses run the show in Kashmir valley.
"If water is added to a sample of milk it would lead to its dilution but if harmful agent like detergent is added to milk it is bound to harm the health. The milk would turn into poison and whosoever consumes it is all set to land into trouble as far as his or her health is concerned. Ideally the company should have been debarred from supplying milk but in Kashmir the health norms also get changed," said sources.
Sources while quoting common masses said that some of leading companies in the food sector have taken people for a ride and time has come when stern action needs to be taken against them. They demand that Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Drug & Food Control Organization and Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution department should forge unity and take sustained action against companies who take people for a ride.
