| 3595 persons killed in 19444 road accidents in last 3 years | | Road accidents kill 3, injure 25 on a daily basis | | Akshay Azad Jammu, Dec 21: Guns have almost fallen silent across the State but a new monster "Road Accidents", has taken birth during the last three years. This monster has so far consumed more lives than militancy and in the last three years 3595 persons have lost their lives in 19444 road accidents, held across Jammu and Kashmir while thousands other sustained injuries. Sources informed Early Times that in the last three years 3595 people have lost their lives in 19444 road accidents, held across state in between 2010-12, besides 28,246 people sustained injuries, some of them seriously. Elaborating the details, sources in Home department informed that despite repeated directions of State Government for adhering of traffic rules, there was no let off in road accidents. "The State Government has so far failed to put a halt on growing number of deaths, due to road accidents, which saw an increase of 286 deaths in 2012, corresponding to previous year 2011, despite decline in number of road accidents in the same period", sources said, adding that during the same period a decline of 28 cases was observed and the statistics stood at 6637 cases in 2012, corresponding to previous year 6665 cases. They further said that in the year 2010 a total of 6142 accident cases were registered, claiming 1029 lives besides leaving 8945 injured. "Moreover during year 2011, a total of 6665 accidents were reported claiming 1140 lives and injuring 10092 persons, while in year 2012, a total of 6637 cases were reported, claimed 1426 lives and injuring 9209", they said. "A total of 19444 road accidents were reported which claimed 3595 lives while leaving injured 28,246 persons", sources said, adding that at an average, everyday 3 persons had been losing their lives in 17 road accidents held across the state everyday while 25 persons had been sustaining injuries. An official pleading anonymity said that 90 percent of the road accidents were caused by human error, due to violation of traffic rules and most of the victims were youth. "Most of the road accident victims are college and school going youth bikers, who seldom reduce their speed even on bad road stretches. The drivers often overloading their vehicles and despite imposing of penalty by law enforcing agencies, there is no reduction in road accidents", he said, adding that a joint effort of administration and citizens is needed to curb the menace. |
