| Congress may slightly amend 'CSC Report' to ensure coalition's survival | | | Jammu: After finding that the Congress high command was not in favour of altering the five-year old political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir within pressure tactics from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the coalition ally Congress is likely to amend Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC) Report on creation of new administrative units in a bid for the survival of coalition. Party sources said that the main objective of the Congress is to check mate the NC leadership from making the exercise on setting up new administrative units Kashmir valley centric. "The Congress wants that the regions of Jammu and Ladakh too get equal share in the new plan, party sources added. Sources in the Congress said that chief minister Omar Abdullah has continued to be in a fighting mood after he realized that the Congress high command is unwilling to let him (Omar) to quit at this juncture with the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections are at hand. According to these sources, the Congress leaders in the state continue to support the Cabinet Sub Committee's (CSC) Report on the new administrative units the committee may try to make some amendments in its original report which could be acceptable to the National Conference. "The first amendment would be to increase the number of administrative units so that areas that deserve to have new units were accommodated, sources said. "And if the cabinet accepted the CSC report listing the need for increasing the number of units it may cost the state exchequer more than Rs.1800 crores," sources said and added, "and to make these units viable the state Government has to seek financial assistance from the central Government." Reports said since Congress led UPA Government has been told by both the NC and the Congress leaders that the new administrative units help the ruling coalition to gain electoral advantage during the Lok Sabha and the Assembly election the union Government may willingly bear the financial burden. |
