| Five militants, one policeman killed, five injured | | Four security personnel committed suicide, three died in different accidents | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Jan 31: In the first month of the current year 2014, five militants and one policeman was killed in different militancy related operations. In these attacks, two Army soldiers and three policemen were also injured. People observed shut down for two days across Kashmir on the call given by separatist leaders while separate shut downs were observed in Sopore, Handwara, Kupwara, Tral and Gowkadal against the killing of innocent civilians. Four security personnel committed suicide while three Army personnel died in different accidents in the first month of year 2014. Militants carried out three attacks on Security Forces alone in North Kashmir's Sopore town in the month of January. An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Special Operation Group of JK Police, Kafeel Ahmed Mir from Keran (43-SPR) was killed and three policemen injured when suspected militants fired on them in Sopore Tehsil of north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Three SOG personnel injured in the attack were Constables, Irfan Ahmed from Pulwama (124-SPR), Manzoor Ahmed Ganaie from Panzala Rafiabad (822-SPR), Zakir Ahmed Sheikh from Taratpora Handwara (821-SPR). An Army patrol was fired upon in Begpora area of Awantipora in South Kashmir by suspected militants. Army claimed that it killed a Hizb militant in the shootout who was identified as Wasim Yousuf Dar resident of Digripora Pulwama. Militants opened fire on a joint party of SOG and 27 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in the second week of January when they were establishing cordon in in Chairhar area, Sopore. However, there was no loss of life and militants managed to flee from the spot. Three militants including a Jaish-i-Muhammad commander were killed and two Army soldiers injured in a fierce gun-battle in Dooru hamlet of Sopore town in North Kashmir. Police identified the slain militants as Abu Hassan, Muzamil alias Farooq and Rizwan. During the encounter, two soldiers from 22 RR, S.Kafoor and Ajit Pradhan were also injured. During a mock drill Government Forces disposed off a live grenade in the premises of State Bank of India housing 179 Battalion of CRPF personnel that created panic in the town. Army personnel from 35 RR allegedly fired some gunshot in air to prevent a Maruti car getting escaped from Tengpora Bypass. On January 20, a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant, Javid Salfi was killed in an encounter with Government Forces involving 9 RR in Qazigund area of South Kashmir's Kulgam district. Another militant Raja Muzafar was killed in a gunfight with 3 RR at Dadsara area of Tral in Pulwama district. A BSF trooper Constable Kanshi Kumar of 80 battalion posted at Badal Post in Sunderbani belt of Rajouri allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Rajouri district. A constable Ashok Kumar (belt no 813) of JKAP's 8th batallion hailing from Bishnah Jammu was found dead in his room at Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. A missing constable Abdul Rashid Hakeem son of Ghulam Muhammad resident of Malapora Sheeri Baramula posted as guard commander at Veervan Pandit Colony in Baramulla was found dead. A CRPF Head Constable, Baalu Saroday of 73rd battalion shot himself dead from an AK assault rifle at Bemina camp in Srinagar. Two Army jawans Lempa Konyak and Thoudam Sanaton Singh of 5 ASSAM died after an avalanche hit the army post in Sonapendi Gali of Machil sector in Kupwara. A Territorial Army jawan, Balwant Singh committed suicide by consuming poison in Udhampur district. An Army officer, Major D S Bhinder of Meerut accidentally slipped into river Chenab in Akhnoor belt of Jammu district and was washed away by its strong current. |
