| NC succumbs to Congress pressure on 73rd amendment | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 8: National Conference (NC) has succumbed to the pressure of its coalition partner Congress on implementing the 73rd amendment in the state. Sources in the Government said that Congress had bargained with National Conference over the creation of new administrative units and had decided that the Congress Ministers will only support the Government plan to create new administrative units, if NC agrees to implement the 73rd amendment. Today when the State Cabinet met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in civil secretariat around 4 pm, the Congress Ministers pressed for implementing the 73rd amendment. "The Chief Minister kept his promise and agreed to implement all the important provisions of the 73rd amendment in state Panchayati Raj Act to make it stronger," sources in Government said. The 73rd amendment couldn't be implemented in the state in letter and spirit due to the presence of Art 370, due to which the state has its own constitution. Now, as almost all important provisions have been approved to implement in this Act, Congress Ministers are feeling excited and happy over it. "This was the long pending demand of Congress Ministers but the NC people were not agreeing to it. Though the 73rd amendment hasn't been fully implemented but we have got what we wanted," said a Congress leader. After the Cabinet meeting was over, all the Congress Ministers went to Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) office to celebrate the decision taken by the State Cabinet. This time the NC hasn't been able to stop Congress party in getting their share. |
