| Shabir Khan still absconding, police yet clueless about his whereabouts | | | Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, Feb 8: Former junior Minister for Health Shabir Ahmad Khan is still absconding though there were rumors that Khan has surrendered before police in Gandhi Nagar police station. Shabir is wanted in a high profile sexual assault case registered against him in Police Station Shahid Gunj in Srinagar. Though rumors were rife that Khan surrendered before police in Gandhi Nagar. However, late evening reports confirmed that Khan was still absconding and has not yet surrender nor has police made any headway so far in arresting him. When contacted SP City South, Rahul Malik said that these are just rumors and that the former Minister has not yet surrendered. "No these are just rumors, he (Khan) has not surrendered before the police in Gandhi Nagar," Rahul told Early Times. It was also reported by a section of media that soon after he surrendered, Khan was flown to Srinagar by a special team of police; however, police in Srinagar did not confirm the surrender and subsequent shifting of Khan to Srinagar. Police sources in Srinagar told Early Times that the Police Station Shahid Gunj where FIR has been lodged against Khan for sexual assault had no information about the same till this report was filed. "We too are waiting for his custody if he has really surrendered but so far we have no information about this development" a police official in Srinagar told Early Times this evening. He said the a case under section 509 RPC stands registered in Police station Shahid Gunj and a non-bailable warrant has been issued against the accused. Meanwhile, a senior police official on the conditions of not to be named told Early Times that police was clueless about Khan's whereabouts but added that efforts are on to arrest him in the sexual assault case. It merits a mention here that a lady doctor registered a complaint of molestation against Khan in Police Station Shahid Gunj, Srinagar where a case FIR no 14/2014 under section 509 stands registered. The doctor has said in her complaint that she received repeated calls from Khan's staff over a week ago. She was told that the Minister wants to know about the announcements made by Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during his visit to the hospital where she works. Despite her requests that Minister should obtain the information from senior officials, the doctor alleged, she was compelled to report at the Minister's office on January 28. The lady doctor presently posted as Block Medical Officer Pampore said when she reached Khan's office at the Secretariat, 10-15 people were already present there but Khan asked her to go and wait inside a small cabin. The woman said she refused to leave the office but the Minister convinced her to sit inside the cabin. When the Minister came to meet her at the cabin, she said, he acted like a "sexual predator" and made provocative advances - both verbal and physical. He also offered her many favours despite her resentment, the doctor said. The meeting lasted for 10-15 minutes, she said. The doctor claimed that the Minister accompanied Azad when he came for the inspection of the hospital, yet called her to get the information. She also said that Khan asked her to meet him at the Circuit House where he was staying. |
