| Walkouts only help the Government | | Assembly session | | Neha JAMMU, Feb 27: Ever since the commencement of winter session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature in Jammu, the opposition parties, without any exception, are staging walkouts to register their protest against the Government's negative attitude towards their demands and suggestions. On February 26 also the Jammu-based non-Congress and non-NC opposition parties staged a walkout over what they said the "failure" of the Government to provide residential plots to border migrants at safer places". They accused the Government of adopting discriminatory attitude towards the border migrants. It was during the Question Hour that a Jammu-based legislator raised the issue of problems being faced by the people living along the International Border between India and Pakistan in the Bishnah Assembly Segment and said the Government had made a commitment with them to allot residential plots measuring five marlas at a safer place in wake of firing incidents on the borders. Reflecting on the Government reply in response to his question about firing incidents by the Pakistani Army and rangers on international borders, the said lawmaker bemoaned the absence of any mention about residential plots for border migrants. He accused the Government of being non-serious towards their plight and staged walkout. A number of other Jammu-based non-NC and non-Congress also joined their colleague and endorsed his demand for residential plots for border migrants. They also walked out of the Assembly. Should the lawmakers resort to walkouts to register their protest against the Government? They should not. By staging walkouts, they only make the working of the Government smooth. In a way, the walkouts only help the Government and weaken the cause of the affected and aggrieved people. They must stay put in the legislature and put maximum pressure on the Government so that the issues they take up are considered. Lawmakers, especially those from Jammu province, need to recognize the fact that the people are not appreciating the politics of walkouts. |
