| Army soldier goes berserk, shoots five colleagues before killing himself | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Feb 27: In a bizarre incident an Army soldier went berserk and killed five of his colleagues before shooting himself during the dead of the night at their camp in the Manasbal area of Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. Reports reaching here said that Sepoy Ranveer of 4 Kumaon posted with 13 Rashtriya Rifles of 3 Sector at the Safapora camp in Manasbal went on the rampage and killed five of his colleagues while injuring the sixth one. The Sepoy later shot himself to death after firing from his own gun. Sources said that Sepoy Ranveer exchanged words with his colleagues with both the sides entering into an argument. During dead of the night at about 1:40 AM Sepoy Ranveer entered the guard room and opened nozzle of his gun. He pumped bullets on six soldiers with five of them suffering fatal injuries. The slain soldiers have been identified as Amit Kumar of 12 Kumaon, Lance Naik Tabruq Ansari of 278 Field Regiment, Sepoy Surinder Singh of 2 Kumaon, Rifleman M R Ajinath of 36 Medical Regiment and Rifleman Rajput Joni of 278 Field Regiment. The injured soldier has been identified as Naik Kaka Sahab. Terming the incident as a tragic one, Srinagar based Defence Spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi said that one soldier of 13 Rashtriya Rifles located in Manasbal Garrison of Ganderbal District, fired and caused fatal injuries to five of his fellow soldiers with his service rifle before killing himself. "Approximately 0200 hrs (2:00 AM) on February 27 a soldier of the unit who was on sentry duty at Manasbal Garrison opened fire with his service rifle on fellow soldiers who were in a room. This resulted in fatal injuries to five of them and non fatal injury to another. Subsequently, he committed suicide by firing at himself. The injured soldier has been evacuated to 92 Base Hospital for treatment and his condition is stable," said Lt Col Joshi. The defence spokesman said that all the soldiers belonged to 13 Rashtriya Rifles, which to its credit has 125 awards which includes one Ashoka Chakra and two Kirti Chakras. He said the unit has an excellent anti-militancy record as it has killed and apprehended a large number of militants which includes a HM militant, Talib Lalli alias Wasim in September 2013, who was the District Commander of Bandipora. Lt Col Joshi said that Police has been informed of the incident and a FIR is being lodged. Army has ordered a high level inquiry to investigate into the circumstances under which the unfortunate incident occurred. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has expressed grief over the incident and said that he has been pained to learn about the death of the soldiers. |
