Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 12: The rumour mongers on Tuesday evening tried to put the state on fire by spreading wrong news of death of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and termed the snapping of phone connections in valley a ploy of government.
But the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was quick to response through social blogging site Twitter, where he cleared that phone lines have been snapped due to snow and there is no hand of government in snapping the lines.
"The telephone lines in the valley are down because of the snow having snapped a line. BSNL is working to restore the services," Omar said in his first tweet on Tuesday evening.
In another tweet, he said, "I know we love a good conspiracy theory but the failure of the phones has nothing to do with rumours floating around."
The prompt response by the chief minister saved the state from exploding on an issue which was not there. But the government should have put to task such rumour mongers who were floating rumours of Geelani's death.
Geelani, a separatist leader has some following in Kashmir valley and his followers are able to make best use of the atmosphere so that they can dictate terms to the government on their condition. He is ill for past few days and his health condition deteriorated last night. His men were trying to fly him to New Delhi for treatment but due to bad weather, they were not able to do so.
The Jammu and Kashmir police must identify such rumour mongers who floated wrong news. Whether they floated this news on social sites or through messaging, police must act against them. If the rumour was floated in social site, the cyber cell of the J&K police must act swiftly and take action against such violators.
