Azad, Soz to tour twin border districts from Mar 14
Congress shifts entire focus on Jammu-Poonch seat
3/12/2014 11:27:20 PM
Jammu, Mar 12: Suspense continues to prevail about the candidates Congress is fielding for Parliamentary elections on three seats of state as an offcial announcement eludes even as the party stalwarts are all set to kickstart campaign for the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat from the border town of Poonch on March 14. The visit was earlier scheduled on March 13 which has noe been delayed by a day due to bad weather condition in Kashmir valley and hilly areas of state.
In what could be seen as Congress trying to safeguard its position first in the constituency where the party feels the rivals have political potential to give the party a strong fight in many areas. While it goes without saying that Congress has larger stakes for the two Jammu LS seats, Jammu -Poonch is the seat where for the first time it feels contest would be tough and therefore party's candidate facing a formidable challenge, unlike in the past when the sailing was comparatively smooth. Apart from other factors, the Congress the constituency for the first time will witness triangular contest, with PDP heavyweight Yash Pal Sharma considered to be a political force in reckoning in the twin border districts, Congress is not ruling out some dent which it may face in the votes on account of Modi wave this time from BJP. This is why the party leadership this time decided to commence the campaign officially from the twin border districts-Rajouri-Poonch where hectic tour schedule has been fixed for both PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad.
What makes this visit interesting is the fact that Azad will kick start campaign for Jammu-Poonch seat and focus on this seat rather than doing the same programmes for Doda-Udhampur where he himself at the moment is being tipped as the candidate Congress high command having decided lately for a couple of reasons. Apart from having his own strong footing in the Doda Udhampur seat, NC has also reassured full support to ally Congress of its full support, albeit on the only condition of any candidate other than Lal Singh contesting election again from this Parliamentary constituency. While all has been set for the tour and programmes in the twin border districts for the two stalwarts campaigning jointly for the party, which is likely to continue for a couple of days, it remains to be seen how this united effort helps the party to consolidate political position in the backdrop of the fact that rival candidates, particularly PDP has since begun a hectic activity in the region, something which Congress is quite conscious about. Meanwhile, CWC meeting being held late this evening is likely to put its stamp on the second list of Congress candidates which may put all speculations at rest with respect to name of candidates for all the three seats.
