Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 23: The Centre has warned the state government against resorting to tactics resulting in low voter turnout in valley. The Centre has said the forth coming Parliamentary elections will set the trend for the subsequent Assembly elections and any design of keeping voters away would be taken seriously.
"We have information that NC may resort to old tactics of keeping voters away for its political consideration. Such past practices will not be accepted now. J&K has shown progressive and gradual movement of voters and this process can't be derailed," said a senior official in the Home Ministry. According to sources the Home Ministry is closely watching the development like killing of youth in Valley after which higher education minister Mohammad Akbar Lone threatened to resign . It's also watching movement of Hurriyat which had given poll boycott call.
Sources said there is definite pattern in these developments. The NC has traditionally favoured low voter turnout so that ts committed voter can vote and propel it to the power. There is palpable resentment and anger among voters against NC and the party fears it would translate into votes.
"Intelligence agencies have report that even the seat of Dr Farooq Abdullah is not safe. So NC could foment trouble to subvert democratic process and this could not be accepted," said an intelligence official.
The Peoples Democratic Party has already been issuing statement that NC could resort to violence to push away the voters so that NC could win the seats by default and keep CM Omar in the chair.
The party had repeated warned the centre by its statement in not allowing NC to use this tactics as then State could pay heavy price politically and the Centre too.
It's because of the strong stand of the Centre that Jamat-e-Islami has said it will not issue any poll boycott call as elections are not going to change the discourse on Kashmir issue. The Hurryiat had also though added a rider that it could campaign for the poll boycott.
