Jamat-e-Islami splits over issue of poll boycott
4/12/2014 11:07:26 PM

Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Apr 12: Jamat e Islami Jammu and Kashmir, which very recently announced boycotting of the upcoming elections is actually divided over the issue. The party has virtually split into two factions, the Geelani group and the other group may rightly be called as the traditional Jamat e Islami.
The differences are clear and these surfaced many a times. Not much before the Hurriyat G claimed that the Hurriyat office at Hyderpora is its property which was strongly objected by the Jamat-e-Islami and dared Geelani that the property belonged to it.
The party seems to be in a fix whether to support or oppose the upcoming elections. It is pertinent to mention here that the party remained away from the elections since 1987. The situation on the ground indicates that the majority of the party supporters have a great interest in this democratic exercise.
"Why should the party shy away from supporting the elections. This way the party makes its existence in the religious circles only. By remaining away from the politics the party's existence is in danger since its supporters have made a mind for the voting. They have flayed the negative mindedness of the party," said Mohammad Ashraf from Sangam Budgam.
"It is the right of the people to have the representation of their own choice, who can deliver to them. A party can never have a representative character till it fails to show its political maturity. This time people want a change and the party must encourage them for the same," said Ibrahim from Qamarwari.
"How long can a party live on by saying that the elections are a futile exercise, that the 1987 elections were rigged . Thereafter so many chances came their way. Let them join the politics leaving the ideological differences aside. The party vote share can bring about a healthy change on the ground and it will be a befitting reply to the opportunists," said Mohammad Hussain from Bemina.
The party enjoys a good public support in many parts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. If the sources are to be believed, the activists of the party have made a mind to take part in the coming elections, which will be blessing in disguise for some candidates.
