Increased turnout in Jammu worries NC

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 12 : The huge voter turnout in the Jammu-Poonch constituency has made National Conference nervous. The party which was banking on low voter turnout for success is now wary of the new development. It is devising strategy to dissuade voters from reaching to the polling station. The voter turnout in the valley has always remained well below national average. In the parliamentary election the Srinagar had recorded only 23 percent votes which assured success of Dr Farooq Abdullah by a margin of about 30,000 votes over PDP, not significant figure for the party president and former chief minister. "The huge jump in voter turnout across the country and more so in the State is clear signal that people want a change. It will have an effect in the Kashmir valley also, and people will not stay indoors, as they have realized the vote can bring change and it's not good development for the NC," said a senior NC, who has been sidelined in the Omar Abdullah government. Taking a cue from the voters' turn out in the Jammu, Peoples Democratic Party has started campaign asking voters to come out on the voting day. It has started the campaign stating that absence from voting means voting for the NC. It's likely to strike a chord with voters especially the youth who are seeking a change. The party has balanced its campaign by saying though the voting doesn't mean dilatation of its stand on Kashmir issue but people must
vote for sending true representatives to the parliament. This middle of the road approach is sure to get response from the voters. It has further compounded the worries of the NC as rise in voting percentage will be to the benefit of PDP which is expected to win at least two seats in the valley.
The party knows that a defeat of even a single seat could mean trouble for it in the assembly elections as the on-going elections are seen as a referendum for the party's functioning. It's because of this fact that Dr Farooq is campaigning and sitting in the valley for about last 20-day as he knows that his absence could further mar their prospect and it's the fear of defeat that NC is raking up old tested Art 370 in the hope of political survival.
