Hockey team leaves for Gujarat

JAMMU, May 07: The 18-member state sub-junior boys’ hockey team today left for participation in the 4th National Championship to be held at Vadodra in Gujarat under the banner of Hockey Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, the team underwent a brief coaching camp held at K K Hakhu Stadium under the guidance of State Sports Council coaches, Jagjeet Singh and Joginder Singh.
In the opening match, scheduled to take place on May 11, J&K boys shall take on Punjab.

DYSS postpones competitions

JAMMU, May 07: Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) today postponed the two-day inter-school competitions of under-14 and under-17 boys and girls at different venues, here.
These inter-school competitions of Jammu district in the disciplines of badminton, fencing, boxing and chess were scheduled to take place at MA Stadium, BSF Paloura and DBN School, here.
The fresh dates for the same events shall be communicated to all the concerned in due course of time, a handout issued here today informed.

Mathematics wins women’s chess final

JAMMU, May 07: Department of Mathematics won the women’s chess title in the ongoing inter-department sports meet of University of Jammu, organised by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education on the campus, here today.
In the final, Mathematics women defeated the Department of Geography 2-0. The Results: Taniya Gupta bt Mehak Gupta; Teena Khajuria bt Hassina Bano.
Earlier, in the semifinal, Department of Mathematics outplayed the Law School 2-0. The Results: Taniya Gupta bt Smiley Gupta; Teena Khajuria bt Vibhuti Narania.
Meanwhile, in men’s chess event, Department of Sanskrit trounced the Law School 2-1. The Results: Rajay bt Utkarsh; Gopal bt Vishal; (winner v/s winner) Gopal bt Utkarsh.

BADMINTON: Meanwhile, in women’s badminton competition, Department of Computer Sciences (MCA) outplayed SHTM 2-1. The Results: Ankita bt Roshni 21-04; Akshma and Ankita bt Navneet and Roshni 22-20. Reverse singles: Akshma bt Naveet 21-11.
In men’s badminton event, Department of Mathematics won both the scheduled matches to move into the next round of the competition.
In the first match, Mathematics beat Department of Psychology 2-0. The Results: Amit bt Raza 21-05; Sushil bt Haroon 21-14. In their next game, Department of Mathematics trounced Department of Computer Sciences (MCA) 2-1. The Results: Amit bt Rahul 21-07; Sushil lost to Balpreet 21-12; Amit and Sushil bt Balpreet and Rahul 21-10.
Department of Physical Education also won their match played against SHTM 2-0. The Results: Taranpal bt Navdeep 21-08; Rahul bt Kamal 21-12.
Today’s competition officiated by the Raj Kumar Bakshi, RavishVaid , Gagan Kumar, Vikas Karlopia, PD Singh and Nisha Sharma.

Tawi Trekkers releases calendar of activities

JAMMU, May 07: Tawi Trekkers J&K, the biggest trekking club in the state, today released its calendar of activities for the year 2014-15 in a function held at Sprawling Buds School, Chinore, here.
Chief guest, president, Dogri Sanstha, Prof. Lalit Magotra released the calendar in the presence of office bearers of the club, Principals and Directors of various schools as also trekkers and sport climbers.
Highlighting the activities to be undertaken by the club this year, general secretary, Ram Khajuria mentioned that the calendar included two Himalayan trekking programmes one each at the beautiful Moungri area of Udhampur for 500 children and Dharamshala in Himahal Pradesh for about 200 school children during summer vacations.
It also includes two trekking expeditions in Dhauladhar Range in Himachal Pradesh for junior and senior members besides regular short treks and visits to heritage sites and Wild Life parks in Jammu region.
To spot talent in sport climbing at the grass root level and to groom it for future competitions, the club has an ambitious plan of conducting regular coaching cum practice camps in co-ordination with Mountaineering Association of J&K at Sprawling Buds School. A state level sport climbing competition shall also be conducted by Tawi Trekkers in the month of November.
The major attraction of the year would, however, be an Adventure Film Festival in which films on adventure of international standard shall be screened. The event shall be organized in cooperation with Indian Mountaineering Foundation, North Zone Committee, New Delhi in the month of September.
Also advisor of the club, Prof. Magotra earlier hoped that with concerted efforts of the club and the Association and generous sponsorship of such activities by the J&K State Sports Council, the state would again become a formidable force in sport climbing and mountaineering at the national level. He expressed his gratitude to the management of various schools, especially Sprawling Buds School, for their help and active cooperation.
Principal of Shangrilla Public School, Surestha Khajuria and Principal of St. Xavier Senior Secondary School, Barnai were the guests of honour, who assured their help and cooperation in smooth conduct of activities. Prominent among others present were Puja Sharma, Principal and Rahul Sharma, Director of Sprawling Buds School as also Ritesh and Aamna Lone.
